Live review: MADNESS at the County Ground

London ska legends MADNESS stopped in Bristol last week for an epic performance at the County Ground.

The show featured on the final leg of the band’s Grandslam Tour of major sporting venues around the UK.

Unfortunately the home of Gloucestershire County Cricket Club suffered poor sound quality and a lack of atmosphere on the night, but that didn’t stop thousands of ska nuts enjoying this rare occasion in the city.

Support band CHAINSKA BRASSIKA went down well with the hardened crowd but for those who had been hanging around since 4pm it was a long wait until MADNESS finally took the stage at 8.30pm.

Early on it was fantastic to hear tracks like “Embarrassment”, “My Girl” and “The Prince” from the band’s 1979 debut album.

Mid-set the band ploughed through some of their lesser known songs, which even included guitarist Chris Foreman performing a rubbish karaoke version of “Living On A Prayer” by BON JOVI.

Luckily the last half hour was filled with a killer combination of “One Step Beyond”, “House of Fun”, “Wings of a Dove”, “Baggy Trousers”, “Our House” and “It Must Be Love”.

Encores included PRINCE BUSTER cover “Madness” and finishing up with “Night Boat To Cairo”.

Despite the venue issues the performance was awesome and the set was filled with plenty of humour and fun.
