LEE THOMPSON SKA ORCHESTRA live at the Fleece: Fan-filmed video

The LEE THOMPSON SKA ORCHESTRA, brainchild of MADNESS saxophonist Lee “Kix” Thompson, performed in Bristol last week (20 May) to a packed house at The Fleece.

Here’s some fan-filmed video footage of the band in full flow:

The night was a celebration of Thompson’s love of 1960s Jamaican ska and saw the 12-strong band, featuring a very large horn section, squeeze on to the tiny Fleece stage.

Understandably the group concentrated mostly on non-MADNESS material and were good enough to come back on stage for one encore.

Local ska/reggae bands THE EMPERIALS and THE SIMMERTONES provided fantastic support on the night.

Thompson’s band was formed in the back streets of Hackney in 2011, and as well as his usual saxophone duties, he has taken on the lead vocals in a hand-picked line-up that features fellow MADNESS original Mark “Bedders” Bedford on bass.

The band line-up includes:

  • Lee “Kix” Thompson (MADNESS) - saxophone and vocals
  • Mark “Bedders” Bedford (MADNESS) - bass
  • Steve “Roo-B-Doo” Rooney (LP6/KILL 2) - drums
  • Kevin “Born Ready” Burdett (MADNESS/DAMAGED GOODS) - guitar
  • Louis “Diamond Legs” Vause (CRUNCH/BUTTERFIELD 8) - piano
  • Seamus “Nice Man” Beaghen (MADNESS/BUTTERFIELD 8) - organ
  • Steve “Ice Cool” Turner (MADNESS/LP6) - tenor
  • Terry “Individual” Edwards (THE HIGSONS/BUTTERFIELD 8) - alto
  • Steve “Chalky” White (LP6/DANCE BRIGADE) - trumpet
  • Darren “Fordie” Fordham (REECE/DAMAGED GOODS) - vocals

The DESMOND DEKKER cover is taken from the forthcoming debut album The Benevolence of Sister Mary Ignatius, which is out on 3 June.
